Daman was earlier called by the name of Damao. The Portuguese ruled Daman for a long, long time. Daman and Diu, was a part of Goa. From the 8th to 13th century there was a stronghold of the Chowda Rajputs who were threw out by the Waghalas who in turn were barred by Muslims in1330. It continued under Muslims rule for another two hundred years when the Portuguese conquered it.
